A little time is all it takes, Brad McMullen discovers

Brad McMullen of Thorold thought he was too busy. Between work, friends and volunteering for a local shelter and soup kitchen, he didn't know how being a Big Brother would fit into his life.

Then along came a high school friend who told him how much he enjoyed being a Big. Brad realized that the role would be fun and the time commitment only a few hours per week.

Two or three months later, after giving it some thought, Brad decided to become a Big. The prospective police officer currently employed as an insulation contractor mentors 13-year-old Jordan and is making a difference in his life, just as he hoped he would.

Most Wednesdays after Brad has finished work, the two get together for about three hours, roughly from 6 to 9 p.m. Sometimes they go bowling, golfing or mini-golfing. Sometimes they walk around at Niagara Falls, rent movies or play videogames.

Jordan is a "great kid" not at all the troublemaker Brad once thought all Little Brothers would be. Also, Jordan's schedule is flexible, so changing days for getting together is not a problem. The time issue has melted into memory, and Brad, 22, who is single and lives with his parents, still has plenty of time for work, friends and his other volunteering role.

"The time commitment is small but the impact is lasting,"he says. "Plus, it's a lot of fun. I enjoy being a Big Brother a lot more than I thought I would."
